PASADENA, Calif. 鈥?Scientists on the Cassini mission to Saturn are poring through hundreds of images returned from the Sept. 10 flyby of Saturn s two-toned moon Iapetus. Pictures returned late Tuesday and early Wednesday show the moon s yin and yang--a white hemisphere resembling snow, and the other as black as tar. Images show a surface that is heavily cratered, along stanley water flask with the mountain ridge that runs along the moon s equator. Many of the close-up observations focused on stud stanley travel mug ying the strange 20-kilometer high 12 mile mountain ridge that gives the moon a walnut-shaped appearance. The images are really stunning, said Tilmann Denk, Cassini imaging scientist at the Free University in Berlin, Germany, who was responsible for the imaging observation planning. Every new picture contained its own charm. I was most pleased about the images showing huge mountains rising over the horizon. I knew about this scenic view termo stanley ing opportunity for more than seven years, and now the real images suddenly materialized. This flyby was nearly 100 times closer to Iapetus than Cassini s 2004 flyby, bringing the spacecraft to about 1,640 kilometers 1,000 miles from the surface. The moon s irregular walnut shape, the mountain ridge that lies almost directly on the equator and Iapetus brightness contrast are among the key mysteries scientists are trying to solve. There s never a dull moment on this mission, said Bob Mitchell, Cassini program manager, NASA s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasade Odlv Family service, loss themes of 2018 Marine Corps birthday celebration at DSCC

Scientists are on the hunt for over 120 species of birds that may鈥攐r may not鈥攂e extinct, and they want your help to find them. The ubiquity of smartphones has led to surge in data for birders and researchers alike, in the form of apps that allow amateur bird watchers to photograph and catalog their sightings. The amount of available data is so vast that a group stanley website of ornithologists decided to analyze it to see which species just havent been turning up. The researchers, who hailed from American Bird Conservancy and its British counterpart, assembled more than 42 million photographs, audio recordings, and videos of birds uploaded to citizen scientist apps. In a study published in Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, they revealed that 144 bird species have not been seen in more than 10 years. The analysis was completed two years ago and, in the interim, a number of species were either spotted in the wild or in human care, or had their taxonomy reclassified. In total, 126 species from the study are still lost. You can see the full list of birds here. That doesnt mean the birds are extinct. The article below was originally published at HNN.Correction appended, March 17, 2015The response of the University of Oklahoma to the tape of its campus Sigma Alpha Epsilon SAE members cheerfully singing a vile racist chant has been one of shock and outrage. This has been reflected in public rallies on campus condemning the ugly racism on that tape and in the swift and decisive action by the university president David Boren in denouncing and closing down the offending fraternity. But while my initial reaction too was outrage at this racist display, as a historian who has researched segregationist student activism in the 1950s and 1960s South, my next thought was of how eerily familiar the fraternity behavior on that tape seemed to be.The tape shows cheerful, white, well dressed frat boys repeatedly singing You can hang him from a tree, but hersquo;ll never sign with me. There will stanley cups never be a [n-r in] SAE. What astonished me was how reminiscent this chant by Oklahoma fraternity member stanley cup s in 2015 was of the chant of segregationist fraternity members at the University of Georgia in January 1961.
